The new millennium brought changes to the Milwaukee Police Department. When Nan Hegerty came on the job in 1976 she was one
of nine female police officers on the department. In 2003 she became the first female Police Chief for the city. Computers in squad
cars finally became the norm and a new District Three was constructed. DNA became one of the greatest advances in criminal
detection and in 2009 it put the Milwaukee Police Department on the trail on of another serial killer, "The North Side Strangler." 2009
also saw changes in staffing and the district boundaries were redrawn. Though 2009 saw four officers shot in the line of duty, this
decade is the first with no officer to die in performance of their duty.
