"Squad 4 and 13, Man shot, 16 and National." That 1930 transmission was the first to crackle over the air waves and into the squad cars of the
Milwaukee Police Department. This ushered in a new era of policing. The department has now grown to over 1,100 employees as then city nears
600,000 residents. The Safety Building was erected and opened in 1935. This housed the administrative offices, police training school, and the
First District. Organized labor was becoming a force and police were often thrust in the middle of strike related violence. The mid 30's also saw a
mad bomber terrorise the city planting bombs at public buildings including two District Stations.
Milwaukee's armored fort was built but was so heavy it blew out it's
tires and was never deployed.
